intaglio vs relief

Etching An intaglio process resulting from the action of an etchant, formerly an acid, upon a metal plate, where an image has been drawn through an etchant-resistant ground on the surface of the plate. Translucent Allows light to pass through it diffused. Transparent Allows light to pass through it. Opaque Does not allow light to pass through it. Tint Base/Trans Base An additive that is used to reduce an ink's opacity. Magnesium Carbonate (Mag or magcarp) The substance used principally to stiffen ink. Extender White or colorless pigment matter used with ink to add body, and or increase coverage. Viscosity The degree of the ink's resistance to flow. Tack Describes the stickiness of an ink film to separate cleanly from one surface to another during printing. Length The measurement of the distance an ink will stretch before it breaks. Body A general term for the consistency of ink, referring to its length, tack, and viscosity of ink. They help to transfer recessed ink from the plate onto paper as it passes through the press. Blanket/Felt Woven woolen felt, used as a cushion between the roller and the paper on an etching press. Pusher Topmost felt, it is woven to withstand wear and tear from the press cylinder. Cushion Middle felt, is the thickest blanket of the three and is used as a cushion so that the paper can form around the plate as it passes through the press. It is used to absorb the excess water and sizing that comes off the paper as it runs through the press. Sizing Catcher Bottom-most felt, it is a thin, smooth blanket placed directly over the dampened sheet of paper during printing.

INTAGLIO VS RELIEF REGISTRATION

Registration Correct placement of an image on a previously printed image on the same print. The effect is often simulated in machine - made papers. Deckle Edge The irregular edge of the sheet of handmade paper, caused when the deckle is removed from the mold. Sizing A water resistant material added to paper, either after or during its manufacture. Digital Printmaking A print produced and output through digital means. Monotype One-of-a-kind printed image made on an unarticulated surface. Screen Printing A stencil printing technique, where the stencil is supported by a tightly stretched fine woven silk or synthetic mesh. Relief Printing from an ink raised surface. Intaglio An image cut or etched into a plate. Lithography A planographic printing process, based upon the antipathy of oil and water.
